細部へのこだわりと強い意志が素朴屋の精神性

出身はどちらですか。

Where are you from?

フランス出身です。フランスの他、スイス、イタリア、で建築を学び、デンマークの友人が素朴屋で大工としてインターンをしている様子に影響を受けて、私も素朴屋でインターンをしたい！と紹介してもらいました。

I’m from France.

I studied architecture in several countries, including Switzerland and Italy. A friend of mine from Denmark was doing a carpentry internship at SOBOKUYA, and after seeing his experience, I thought, I want to intern there too! So he introduced me to the company.

素朴屋の第一印象を聞かせてください。

What was your first impression of SOBOKUYA?

まず、北杜市の山梨本社へ初めて訪れたとき、想像以上に大きな木造建築に魅了されました。また、職人である大工の技術レベルの高さにも圧倒されました。建築現場ではあらゆる物事が音楽を奏でるようにスムーズかつ効率的に進んでいました。その裏側には入念な準備体制があることも知り、私の人生で最も心を動かされた経験の一つとなりました。

When I first visited the Yamanashi headquarters in Hokuto City, I was fascinated by the scale of the wooden building—it was even larger than I had imagined. I was also overwhelmed by the high level of skill demonstrated by the carpenters.
On the construction site, everything moved smoothly and efficiently, almost like a piece of music being played. Later I learned how much careful preparation happens behind the scenes, and it became one of the most moving experiences of my life.

言語の壁がある中で、どのようにコミュニケーションを取っていきましたか。

How did you communicate despite the language barrier?

大工として一緒に働いた先輩の心平さんがとても英語が上手で、親切に、そして根気強く私に説明してくださったことで理解を深め合うことができたと感じています。また、大工のみなさんはボディランゲージを使って積極的にコミュニケーションを取ってくださいました。日本語が話せない自分自身を恥ずかしく思うこともありましたが、排除されたと感じたことはなく、みなさんが思いやりの気持ちを持って私に接してくれていることを日々実感していました。これほどまでに温かいチームの一員になれたことに、とても感謝しています。

Shinpei, the senior carpenter I worked with, speaks excellent English. He kindly and patiently explained many things to me, which helped deepen our understanding of each other.

The carpenters also communicated actively through body language. At times I felt embarrassed that I couldn’t speak Japanese, but I never once felt excluded. Every day I could feel the kindness and consideration that everyone showed toward me.

I’m very grateful to have been part of such a warm and supportive team.

インターン期間中の経験は、今後の人生にどのような影響を与えそうでしょうか。

How do you think this internship will influence your future?

木造建築の素晴らしさを肌で感じ、建築学を修了した後もさらに追求を続けたい分野であると確信しました。本社である工房で大工さんたちと一緒に作業をしているときには、まるで催眠状態のように没頭することができました。まだまだ改善すべき点は多くありますが、短期間でありながら日本ならではの技術への理解を深め、活用できるようになったことを誇りに思っています。インターンを通して身体的に非常に強くなれたことも、私の中での新たな発見でした。

Experiencing the beauty of wooden architecture firsthand convinced me that it is a field I want to continue exploring even after completing my architectural studies.

When working with the carpenters in the workshop at the headquarters, I often became completely absorbed in the process—almost like being in a state of hypnosis.

Although I still have many things to improve, I’m proud that even in a short period of time I was able to deepen my understanding of Japanese techniques and learn how to apply them. Another discovery for me was how physically strong I became through this internship.

フランスの友人に、素朴屋の技術や精神をどのように説明しますか。

How would you describe SOBOKUYA’s craftsmanship and spirit to your friends in France?

細部へのこだわりに満ちていて、強い意志を持ちながらも互いに真の優しさと気遣いを保ち続けるところが素朴屋に一貫している精神だと思います。無駄なことはせず、つねに核心を突いてきます。他国では感じたことのない、気遣いや細やかな配慮という日本特有の文化的要素にも感銘を受けましたね。時間厳守や効率性においても、フランスと比較すると秀でたものがあります。恵まれた環境に身を置かせてもらえたことを光栄に思います。

I think the spirit of SOBOKUYA lies in its deep attention to detail and its strong determination, combined with genuine kindness and care for one another.

Nothing is unnecessary—everything goes straight to the essence. I was also impressed by cultural elements unique to Japan, such as attentiveness and subtle consideration for others, which I had never experienced in other countries.

Punctuality and efficiency are also remarkable compared to what I’m used to in France. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to work in such a wonderful environment.

Finally, do you have a message for future international interns at SOBOKUYA?

素晴らしいスタッフたちに囲まれ、安らぎを感じながら働くことができると思います。素朴屋で経験できることは、唯一無二でかけがえのない貴重な体験になるはずです。それはあなたの人生の旅路において、ずっと印象深く残っていくことでしょう。
