まず、木材を惜しみなく使った造りに感銘を受けました。巨大な素材と複雑な組み立てのすべてが完璧にフィットしているところです。素朴屋の木造建築を見たことで、自然由来の素材を使わない建築が考えられなくなりました。また、大工の技術に関しては、これほどの緻密さを求められる作業を自分ができるとは思えません。進行自体も早く、建築中も設計作業が継続されるのはフランスと異なる点だと感じました。また、日本の断熱材の薄さにも驚きましたね。フランスと日本との気候の違いや予算について、さらに学ぶ必要があると思いました。
First of all, I was impressed by the generous use of timber. The way massive materials and complex assemblies fit together perfectly left a strong impression on me.
After seeing SOBOKUYA’s wooden architecture, I found it difficult to imagine architecture that doesn’t use natural materials. As for the carpenters’ craftsmanship, I honestly cannot imagine myself being capable of such precise work. The speed of construction also surprised me. I felt that, unlike in France, the design process continues even during construction.
I was also surprised by how thin the insulation is in Japan. It made me realize I need to learn more about the differences in climate and budgeting between France and Japan.

シンプルであることに尽きると思います。山梨本社の周りを歩いたり、朝出勤するたびに見る、私たちの小さなオフィスの建物と煙突、その背景にある八ヶ岳の山々にも美しさを感じています。美しさを感じると同時に、とても穏やかな気持ちになります。日本人独自の美意識や文化の捉え方である「わび・さび」も至るところに存在し、素朴屋という名称にもよく現れていると感じました。設計の仕事にインターンとして携わる中で、素朴屋として日常的にわび・さびを探求していることも理解しました。
I think it comes down to simplicity.
Each morning when I walk around the Yamanashi headquarters, I feel beauty in our small office building and chimney, with the Yatsugatake mountains in the background. That beauty also brings me a deep sense of calm.
I also sense the uniquely Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi everywhere, and I feel that it is well expressed in the name SOBOKUYA itself. Through my internship in design, I came to understand that the company constantly explores wabi-sabi in its everyday work.

私の本業はグラフィックデザイナーですが、設計として３Dパースの制作などを担当し、外部スタッフとしてアドバイスをする方法を学ぶことができました。今後は、グラフィックデザイン分野でもより豊かな経験が得られる機会が生まれることを願っています。素朴屋のみなさんはとても親切で、非常に居心地のよい場所でインターンを経験できたことは私にとって大きな財産となりました。インターン期間は12月までなのですが、実は3月から正社員として素朴屋に入社する予定です！
Yes. My primary profession is graphic design, but here I’ve been involved in architectural design, creating 3D renderings and learning how to provide advice as an external contributor.
I hope that in the future there will be opportunities to gain even richer experiences in the field of graphic design as well. Everyone at SOBOKUYA has been incredibly kind, and being able to intern in such a welcoming environment has been a great gift to me.
My internship runs until December—but actually, I will be joining SOBOKUYA as a full-time employee starting in March!

素朴屋ではたとえスタートは完璧でなくとも、とにかくつくり始めることに重きを置いていると理解しました。まず手を動かしながら、より良いモノづくりを目指します。大工と設計が常に意見交換をしたり、施工管理と話し合ったりしながら、常に現場で最善を尽くしています。
I understood that at SOBOKUYA, even if the starting point is not perfect, what matters most is beginning to build.
You start moving your hands and strive to make things better along the way. Carpenters and designers constantly exchange ideas, and they also communicate closely with construction management. Everyone is always doing their best on site.

建築とデザインとレストランの会社だと、いつも周りに言っていますよ。ユニークな会社ですよね。良い生活空間をつくり出すことがすべてで、そこにはつながりがあります。デザイナーなら、誰もがまず目を向けるべきことだと思います。素朴屋の建築物を見ていると、基本に立ち返ることの重要性を改めて感じます。グラフィックデザインにおいて私が重視しているのは、描画と構成です。それは白と黒の2色だけで済み、自分たちが欲しいものすべてを表現することが可能です。もちろん、基本を習得すれば色などの要素を追加することもできますが、本当にそれが必要なのか、改めて考え直していきたいですね。
I usually describe it as a company of architecture, design, and restaurants.
It’s quite unique. Everything is about creating good living spaces—and all of it is connected. I think it’s something every designer should pay attention to.
When I look at SOBOKUYA’s architecture, I’m reminded of the importance of returning to fundamentals. In graphic design, what I value most are drawing and composition. With just black and white, you can express everything you need.
Of course, once you master the basics, you can add color and other elements. But it’s important to ask yourself whether those additions are truly necessary.

朝、山梨本社では全員で朝礼をしたあとに日本らしい儀式をします。それは、神棚に向かって手拍子（手締め）をして安全祈願と連帯感を生み出す儀式です。そのときの掛け声は「ほーほー」と聞こえますが、「よぉ～おっ！」です（笑）
Every morning at the Yamanashi headquarters, we gather for a morning assembly. After that, we perform a very Japanese ritual: we clap our hands toward the Shinto altar to pray for safety and to foster a sense of unity.
The call you might hear sounds like “ho-ho,” but it’s actually “Yoo〜o!” (laughs)
